मनुरुवाच — इन्द्रिय-मनः-ज्ञान-क्रमः
Manu on the hierarchy of senses, mind, and knowledge
सत्यमग्निपरीचारो विविक्तानां च सेवनम्
bhīṣma uvāca | akṛtaprajño bālo mohaṃ gacchati jāpakaḥ | sa mohān nirayaṃ yāti tatra gatvānūśocati ||
ビーシュマは言った。「成熟した分別を欠く幼稚な行者は、ジャパを行うさなかに迷妄へと落ちる。その迷妄に駆られて地獄のような境地へ赴き、そこに至れば絶えず嘆き悲しむ。この教えは警告する——ジャパのような霊的修行は、正しい理解と自己統御に根ざしていなければならない。さもなくば、修行は無明の別の姿となり、解脱ではなく苦しみへと導く。」
भीष्म उवाच
Japa and other spiritual disciplines bear fruit only when guided by developed discernment (prajñā) and ethical self-control; performed in ignorance, they can deepen delusion and lead to suffering rather than liberation.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction on dharma and renunciation, Bhishma cautions the listener that a misguided, undiscerning ascetic who practices japa may become deluded and thereby fall into a painful state, lamenting the consequences.
