The verse highlights how quickly morale collapses when violence produces uncontrollable chaos: even powerful war-assets like elephants can become a source of fear, and panic spreads through troops when order and confidence break.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that many elephants, their temples split (from musth or injury), are running in all directions and falling; witnessing this, the Kaurava soldiers become terrified.
