अध्याय १: महाप्रस्थानारम्भः
The Commencement of the Great Departure
उत्सृज्याभरणान्यज्राज्जगृहे वल्कलान्युत । भीमार्जुनयमाश्चैव द्रौपदी च यशस्विनी
utsṛjyābharaṇāny ajrāj jagṛhe valkalāny uta | bhīmārjunayamāś caiva draupadī ca yaśasvinī ||
ヴァイシャンパーヤナは語った。飾りを捨て去ると、王は樹皮の衣を身にまとった。ビーマも、アルジュナも、ヤマ（すなわちユディシュティラ）も、名高きドラウパディーもまた同様であった。これは王権のしるしと安楽をみずから退け、苦行を選び取って最後の旅に出るという、意図された出離の表明であり、人生の終わりにおける「執着を離れる」というダルマの理想にかなうものであった。
