Encirclement and Counterassault of Abhimanyu
पितरं चार्जुनं युद्धे न भीर्मामुपयास्यति । 'शत्रुओंकी यह सारी सेना मेरी सोलहवीं कलाके बराबर भी नहीं है। सूतनन्दन! विश्वविजयी विष्णुस्वरूप मामा श्रीकृष्णको तथा पिता अर्जुनको भी युद्धमें विपक्षीके रूपमें सामने पाकर मुझे भय नहीं होगा”
pitaraṃ cārjunaṃ yuddhe na bhīr mām upayāsyati |
サञ्जयは語った。「たとえ戦場で、わが父アルジュナと相まみえることがあっても、恐れは我に及ばぬ。」その周囲の誇り高き言葉の中で、語り手は、敵の全軍は自らの力の十六分の一にも及ばず、また世界を征するヴィシュヌのごとき化身と見なされる舅の聖クリシュナと父アルジュナを敵として目前にしても、なお恐れぬと宣する。ここには戦の道義的緊張が映る――自信と驕りは迷妄へと固まり、敬うべき長老や神意に導かれた相手と刃を交える倫理の重みを、武人の目から覆い隠してしまうのである。
