Droṇa-parva Adhyāya 155 — Ghaṭotkaca-nidhana-śoka and Karṇa-śakti-vyaya

Kṛṣṇa’s strategic reassurance

sañjaya uvāca | pratyudyayus taṃ tvaritāḥ pāñcālā jaya-gṛddhinaḥ | duryodhanasya rakṣārthaṃ droṇācāryo 'pi tān raṇe | pracaṇḍa-vāyūddhṛtān meghān sūrya iva vyanaśayat ||

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how the pursuit of victory (jaya-gṛddhi) and the duty of protecting one’s leader can intensify warfare. It invites reflection on the ethical tension between loyalty/strategic obligation and the human cost of annihilating opponents who are equally driven by ambition and valor.

The Pāñcāla troops quickly surge forward to confront an enemy. Droṇācārya, acting specifically to protect Duryodhana, overwhelms and destroys them, compared to the Sun dispersing wind-driven clouds.
