Chapter 148: Karṇa’s Pressure, Dhṛṣṭadyumna Unhorsed, and the Summoning of Ghaṭotkaca
tataḥ sumahad āścaryaṃ tatrāpaśyāma bhārata | samantapañcakād bāhāṃ śiro yad vyaharat tataḥ ||
The verse highlights the Mahābhārata’s recurring motif that war is accompanied by uncanny, morally charged signs—events that evoke awe and suggest that human violence unfolds under larger, often inscrutable forces of destiny and cosmic order.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that an extraordinary sight occurred at the place outside Samantapañcaka where an arrow had carried a severed head; the verse functions as a transition into describing that marvel/omen.
