Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how, in war, adharma-driven confidence can collapse into fear when confronted by superior valor and consequence. It implicitly contrasts kṣatriya ideals of steadfastness with the moral and psychological unraveling that comes from fighting a doomed or unrighteous cause.

Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Bhīma is inflicting heavy damage on the Kaurava forces. Under Bhīma’s assault, Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s sons abandon the immediate engagement and flee the battlefield, spurring their best horses to escape.
