Duryodhana’s Incursion and the Tumult of Battle

śaineyaḥ sātyakiḥ satyo mitrāṇām abhayamkaraḥ | tad idaṃ hṛdayam evāsīd dvidhā jātaṃ mamādya vai ||

Educational Q&A

Even in a righteous cause, responsibility for one’s decisions can produce moral and emotional strain: concern for allies and the duty to protect them may divide the mind, showing how leadership in war involves ethical burden, not only strategy.

Sañjaya describes a moment of intense worry centered on Sātyaki, praised as truthful and a protector of friends. The speaker’s inner state is portrayed as ‘split in two,’ indicating that attention and anxiety are now shared between two urgent concerns in the unfolding battle situation.
