Droṇa Parva, Chapter 1: Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s grief after Bhīṣma’s fall and the army’s reorientation toward Karṇa
श्रुत्वा भीष्मस्य निधनमप्रहृष्टमना भूशम् । पुत्राणां जयमाकाड्क्षन् विललापातुरों यथा
śrutvā bhīṣmasya nidhanam aprahṛṣṭamanā bhūśam | putrāṇāṃ jayam ākāṅkṣan vilalāpa āturo yathā ||
ビ―シュマの死を聞くと、王の心は沈み、深く喜びを失った。それでもなお子らの勝利を望み、苦悶する者のように声をあげて嘆き悲しんだ。
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse underscores how grief and attachment (especially to one’s own children and faction) can coexist with—and even fuel—continued craving for victory, revealing an ethical blindness that prolongs suffering and obstructs clear discernment of dharma.
After Bhīṣma’s fall/death is reported, Dhṛtarāṣṭra becomes deeply dejected and laments intensely, yet he still yearns for the triumph of his sons, showing the Kaurava camp’s emotional turmoil at the loss of their foremost elder and commander.
