Śiva-nāmānukīrtana-prastāvaḥ
Prologue to the praise of Śiva and the Upamanyu testimony
śambare nihate pūrvaṁ raukmiṇeyena dhīmatā | atīte dvādaśe varṣe jāmbavaty abravīd dhi mām, yudhiṣṭhira |
The verse frames a dharmic concern within royal household life: the desire for progeny and continuity of lineage is presented as a legitimate aim when pursued through proper conduct, and it sets up counsel on family duties and righteous means.
Kṛṣṇa recounts to Yudhiṣṭhira that after Pradyumna (Rukmiṇī’s son) killed the demon Śambara, twelve years passed; then Jāmbavatī, wishing for a son, approached Kṛṣṇa and began to speak, introducing the next part of the story.
