Śārṅgaka-stuti to Agni during the Khāṇḍava Conflagration
evam astv iti taṁ vahni-brahmāṇaṁ pratyabhāṣata | sambhūtau tau viditvā tu nara-nārāyaṇāv ṛṣī |
The verse highlights fidelity to divine counsel and the moral weight of remembrance: when a significant event occurs (the manifestation of Nara–Nārāyaṇa), Agni recalls Brahmā’s prior instruction, implying that dharmic action includes keeping one’s commitments and responding appropriately when the time ripens.
A prior exchange is concluded with assent (“So be it”). Much later, upon learning that the sages Nara and Nārāyaṇa have manifested, Agni remembers Brahmā’s earlier words and returns to Brahmā, indicating a renewed engagement with the earlier plan or directive.
