भीमस्य जलान्वेषणं तथा वनविश्रान्तिः
Bhīma’s Search for Water and the Forest Halt
द्रवन्ति सम नदन्ति सम क्रोशन्त: पाण्डवान् प्रति । (पाञज्चालशरभिन्नाड़ो भयमासाद्य वै वृष: । कर्णो रथादवप्लुत्य पलायनपरो5 भवत् ।।
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca | dravanti sma nadanti sma krośantaḥ pāṇḍavān prati | (pāñcālaśarabhinnāṅgo bhayam āsādya vai vṛṣaḥ | karṇo rathād avaplutya palāyanaparo 'bhavat ||) pāṇḍavās tu svanaṃ śrutvā ārtānāṃ lomaharṣaṇam |
ヴァイシャンパーヤナは語った。—彼らは逃げ惑い、泣き叫び、呻きつつ、パーンダヴァの方へ走り来た。カルナは、パンチャーラの矢により身を裂かれ、恐怖に呑まれて戦車から跳び降り、ただ逃走を念じた。パーンダヴァらは、傷つき苦しむ者たちの、聞けば毛が逆立つ叫びを耳にして、ただちに応じた。
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Even renowned warriors can be overtaken by fear when circumstances turn dire; the verse highlights the human cost of war through the cries of the wounded and the moral pressure such suffering places on leaders and fighters.
In the midst of a fierce clash, troops run toward the Pāṇḍavas crying out; Karṇa, badly wounded by Pāñcāla arrows, jumps from his chariot and flees. The Pāṇḍavas hear the terrifying lament of the afflicted and prepare to act.
