Ādi-parva Adhyāya 132 — Duryodhana’s Instructions to Purocana at Vāraṇāvata

द्रोणस्य तु तदा शिष्यौ गदायोग्यौ बभूवतु: । दुर्योधनश्न भीमश्न सदा संरब्धमानसौ
vaiśampāyana uvāca | droṇasya tu tadā śiṣyau gadā-yogyau babhūvatuḥ | duryodhanaś ca bhīmaś ca sadā saṃrabdha-mānasau ||
ヴァイシャンパーヤナは語った。そのころドローナには、棍棒(ガダー)の戦いにとりわけ適した二人の弟子がいた――ドゥルヨーダナとビー マセーナである。二人の心は常に昂ぶり、互いに怒りと競争心を抱き続けた。その敵意はやがて大いなる争いの火種となる。
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Skill and training are ethically neutral; when fueled by persistent anger and rivalry, they become instruments that intensify adharma and widen conflict. The verse highlights how inner disposition (saṃrabdha-mānasa) shapes the moral outcome of martial prowess.
Vaiśampāyana notes that under Droṇa’s instruction, Duryodhana and Bhīma emerge as the foremost mace-fighters. At the same time, their mutual hostility is emphasized, foreshadowing their later central role in the Kurukṣetra struggle.
