Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Tantra","secondary_vidya":"Mantra","practical_application":"Bhūta-śuddhi / pañcīkaraṇa-tattva-saṃhāra practice: using bīja-mantras and udghāta utterances to dissolve tanmātras and visualize elemental maṇḍalas during worship or initiation.","sutra_style":false}
Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Mantra","entry_title":"Śabda-tanmātra-saṃhāra mantra and Bhūmi-maṇḍala dhyāna (gandha-tanmātra)","lookup_keywords":["śabda-tanmātra","saṃhāra mantra","udghāta","bhūmi-maṇḍala","vajra-lāñchana"],"quick_summary":"Gives variant manuscript readings and the operative mantra for dissolving the sound-tanmātra, followed by visualization of the earth maṇḍala as gandha-tanmātra: yellow, square, hard, vajra-marked."}
Concept: Pratyāhāra-like dissolution: gross perception is retracted into subtle tanmātras, and tanmātras are ritually ‘withdrawn’ via mantra and visualization, aligning microcosm with tattva-order.
Application: Used as a stepwise internal purification before pūjā/nyāsa; also as a meditative template for elemental mastery (bhūta-jaya) within tantric sādhanā.
Khanda Section: Mantra-Tantra & Bhūta-Śuddhi (Pañcīkaraṇa / Tattva-saṃhāra)
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A yogic-ritual visualization: the practitioner recites bīja-mantras (hrūṃ, haḥ, phaṭ) while a yellow square earth-maṇḍala with a vajra emblem appears in the mind-space; marginal notes show variant manuscript readings.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style, central sādhaka seated in padmāsana, stylized mantra syllables floating, a bright yellow square maṇḍala with vajra symbol, five udghāta flames/marks around, minimal temple interior, mystical yet orderly composition","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore style with gold accents, yantra-like square earth-maṇḍala embossed, bīja syllables in decorative script, sādhaka with halo, rich reds and greens, ornate borders emphasizing mantra power","mysore_prompt":"Mysore painting, clean instructional diagram: yellow square labeled bhūmi-maṇḍala, vajra emblem at center, side panel listing mantra variants, sādhaka shown reciting, precise and didactic","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, scholar-sādhaka with manuscript open showing variant readings, delicate calligraphy, a geometric yellow square diagram on a carpet, subtle aura effects, fine border illumination"}
Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"instructional","suggested_raga":"Todi","pace":"medium","voice_tone":"instructional"}
Sandhi Resolution Notes: पञ्चोद्घातैर् = पञ्च-उद्घातैः (visarga/ra-sandhi in recitation); चतुरस्रञ्च = चतुरस्रम् + च; पीतञ्च = पीतम् + च.
Related Themes: Agni Purana 33 (bhūta-śuddhi sequence; tanmātra-saṃhāra; maṇḍala-dhyāna)
It gives a Bhūtaśuddhi (elemental purification) instruction: using specific bīja-mantras (with textual variants noted) to perform saṃhāra—withdrawal/dissolution—of a tanmātra (here, śabda), and then to visualize the earth-maṇḍala characterized by gandha-tanmātra as square, yellow, hard, and vajra-marked.
It preserves practical ritual technology—mantra readings, bīja usage, and mandala visualization—alongside textual-critical notes (variant pāṭhas), showing the Agni Purana’s coverage of mantra-śāstra and tantric sādhanā methods in addition to narrative and dharma topics.
Bhūtaśuddhi aims at inner purification by reabsorbing sensory potentials (tanmātras) back into their source, supporting mantra-japa and worship with a ‘cleansed’ body-mind field; it is traditionally held to remove obstacles and make the practitioner fit for higher ritual and meditation.
