Related Themes: Agni Purana 32 (Saṃskāra-kathana section continuing beyond this verse); Agni Purana 31 (closure colophon of Kuśāpamārjana)
It introduces the saṃskāra-vidhi framework: during dīkṣā (initiation) systems such as Nirvāṇa-dīkṣā, a practitioner should undergo/commission a standardized set of forty-eight purificatory and consecratory rites (saṃskāras).
It signals a shift from a specific purification technique (kuśa-based cleansing) into a structured catalog of ritual sacraments and initiations—showing the Agni Purāṇa’s manual-like coverage of practical religious procedures alongside its many other disciplines.
The verse frames saṃskāras as transformative rites: properly performed initiatory sacraments purify and elevate the practitioner, culminating in “becoming divine” (suro bhavet) in the sense of attaining refined spiritual status and merit.
