Dhaumya’s Enumeration of Eastern Tīrthas
Prācī-diś Tīrtha-kathana
व्रज तीर्थानि नियत: पुण्यं पुण्येन वर्धयन् । भावितै: करणै: पूर्वमास्तिक्याच्छुतिदर्शनात्
vraja tīrthāni niyataḥ puṇyaṃ puṇyena vardhayan | bhāvitaiḥ karaṇaiḥ pūrvam āstikyāc chrutidarśanāt ||
Pulastya said: Go forth, disciplined and self-restrained, to the sacred fords and pilgrimage places, increasing merit by meritorious conduct. Let your faculties first be purified and trained—through faith and through the guidance of what is heard in sacred tradition and realized by right understanding—so that your journey becomes ethically fruitful, not merely a physical wandering.
पुलस्त्य उवाच
Pilgrimage should be undertaken with niyama (discipline) and inner purification; true puṇya grows through virtuous conduct and cultivated faculties, supported by faith (āstikya) and guidance from śruti and right understanding.
Pulastya instructs the listener to undertake a tīrtha-yātrā (journey to sacred places), emphasizing that the journey’s value depends on prior moral and mental preparation rather than mere travel.
