Sudeva Identifies Damayantī in Cedi
Bṛhadāśva uvāca — janena kliśyate bālā duḥkhitā śaraṇārthinī | tādṛg rūpaṃ ca paśyāmi vidyotayati me gṛham ||
Bṛhadāśva said: “This young woman is being harassed by people; she is distressed and seeks refuge. And I perceive in her such a radiance of form that it will illuminate my household.”
The verse foregrounds dharma as compassionate protection: when someone is harassed and seeks refuge, a righteous person should recognize their vulnerability and offer shelter rather than indifference.
Bṛhadāśva observes a distressed young woman being troubled by others and identifies her as a seeker of refuge; he also notes her striking radiance, implying she will bring honor or auspiciousness to his household if protected.
