Dharma-pratyabhijñāna and Vara-pradāna (धर्मप्रत्यभिज्ञानम्—वरप्रदानम्)

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca—ubhābhyām abhyanujñātā sā jagāma yaśasvinī | saha bhartrā hasantīva hṛdayena vidūyatā ||

Mārkaṇḍeya said: Having received permission from both her mother-in-law and father-in-law, the illustrious Sāvitrī set out together with her husband. Outwardly she seemed almost to smile, yet within, her heart was being torn and scorched by grief—showing the dharmic strength of self-control even when one knows suffering is near.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights dharmic composure: one may carry profound sorrow inwardly yet act with steadiness, respect for elders’ consent, and unwavering commitment to one’s chosen duty—here, Sāvitrī’s devoted accompaniment of her husband.

After receiving permission from both in-laws, Sāvitrī departs with her husband. Though she appears calm—almost smiling—she is inwardly distressed, foreshadowing the impending crisis in the Sāvitrī–Satyavān episode.
