Hearing from the ascetic sages who dwelt there that those men had fled in haste, Sahadeva returned to Yudhiṣṭhira and reported the entire course of events. The passage underscores responsible kingship: information must be gathered from reliable witnesses and conveyed truthfully to the rightful leader for dharmic decision-making.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
A dharmic leader acts on accurate knowledge: one should seek trustworthy testimony (here, from resident ascetics) and report facts without distortion to the rightful authority, enabling just and restrained action.
Sahadeva learns from the local ascetic sages that certain people have fled; he then goes back to Yudhiṣṭhira and narrates the full incident, moving the story forward through a formal report.
