Mārkaṇḍeya said: The great sage duly performed for the child all the auspicious rites of early life—thirteen in number—beginning with the birth-rite (jātakarma). Thus the boy’s life was set upon a disciplined and dharmic course through sanctifying observances rather than mere worldly celebration.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
The verse emphasizes that a child’s life should be consecrated through dharmic discipline and auspicious saṃskāras; ethical formation begins early through prescribed rites that align the individual with sacred order and responsibility.
Mārkaṇḍeya narrates that a great sage performed all the customary auspicious childhood rites for a boy—thirteen in total—starting with jātakarma, indicating the child’s formal initiation into a protected and dharma-oriented life.
