Vaiśampāyana said: Then her father gave her to the king and instructed her, saying, “Serve this king with devoted attendance.” The passage frames a father’s injunction as a dharmic duty of loyal service within marriage and royal household order, setting up the later moral consequence when past wrongdoing is recalled and censured.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights a dharmic injunction of loyal, respectful service within marriage—especially in a royal context—presenting śuśrūṣā (attentive service) as a normative duty that sustains household and social order.

The narrator states that the father gives his daughter to the king and explicitly tells her to serve him; this functions as a setup for subsequent events where her past conduct becomes morally evaluated.
