उत्तङ्कोपाख्यानप्रारम्भः — Uttanka’s Tapas, Viṣṇu-stuti, and the Dhundhumāra Prophecy

Opening

न ते<स्त्यविदितं किज्चिदतीतानागतं भुवि | तस्मादिमं परिक्‍लेशं त्वं तात हृदि मा कृथा:,सारी पृथ्वीको जीतकर सदा सानन्द और सुखी रहो। तात युधिष्ठिर! मैंने तुम्हें जो यह धर्म बताया है, इसका पालन भूतकालमें भी हुआ है और भविष्यकालमें भी इसका पालन होना चाहिए। भूत और भविष्यकी ऐसी कोई बात नहीं है, जो तुम्हें ज्ञात न हो; अतः: इस समय जो यह क्लेश तुम्हें प्राप्त हुआ है, इसके लिये हृदयमें कोई विचार न करो

na te 'sty aviditaṃ kiñcid atītānāgataṃ bhuvi | tasmād imaṃ parikleśaṃ tvaṃ tāta hṛdi mā kṛthāḥ ||

Vaiśampāyana said: “Nothing on earth—whether of the past or the future—is unknown to you. Therefore, dear one, do not take this present affliction into your heart.”

Educational Q&A

The verse urges inner steadiness: one who understands the flow of time and the workings of dharma should not let present suffering lodge in the heart. Knowledge and perspective are to be used to restrain grief and maintain righteous resolve.

Vaiśampāyana, in the course of recounting the Vana Parva, voices a consoling instruction addressed to Yudhiṣṭhira: despite current hardship, he should not be overwhelmed, since he is portrayed as discerning matters of past and future and thus capable of bearing adversity with composure.
