Bhāgīratha’s Tapas and the Petition to Gaṅgā (गङ्गावतरण-प्रसङ्गः)

Aṁśumantaṁ ca sampūjya samāpayata taṁ kratum | samāptayajñaḥ sagaro devaiḥ sarvaiḥ sabhājitaḥ ||

Sagara, having duly honored Aṁśumān, brought that sacrificial rite to its completion. When the sacrifice was finished, all the gods together paid Sagara great respect. Ethically, the verse highlights that rightful completion of a vowed rite (kratu) is joined with gratitude and public honoring of merit—both toward the worthy helper (Aṁśumān) and toward the sacrificer who fulfills his commitment.

Educational Q&A

The verse underscores dharma in two linked forms: completing a vowed rite without lapse, and honoring those who contribute to its success. Social and divine recognition (sabhājana) is portrayed as a fitting response to fulfilled duty and gratitude.

King Sagara respectfully honors Aṁśumān and then concludes the sacrificial ceremony. After the yajña is completed, all the gods collectively honor Sagara for the successful completion of the rite.
