Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Collapse and Vyāsa’s Counsel

rājendra! tava putraṁ nimittaṁ kṛtvā kālasya preraṇayā asya vairasya utpattiḥ tava purata eva abhavat. avaśyaṁ bhavitavye ca kurūṇāṁ vaiśase nṛpa, kasmāc chocasi tān śūrān gatān paramikāṁ gatim?

O lord of kings, with your son as the occasion, and urged on by Time, the rise of this enmity happened before your very eyes. And when the slaughter of the Kurus was inevitable, O king, why do you grieve for those heroes who have departed to the highest state?

Educational Q&A

Vyāsa frames the catastrophe as driven by Kāla (Time/destiny) and already set in motion through Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s son; when an outcome is inevitable and the fallen have attained the highest state, grief should be tempered by discernment and acceptance.

After the war, Dhṛtarāṣṭra laments the death of the Kauravas. Vyāsa addresses him, reminding him that the feud arose openly before him with Duryodhana as the occasion, and that the Kuru annihilation was unavoidable; therefore mourning the departed heroes is questioned.
