Śalya Installed as Commander; Coalition Agreement and Battle Arrays (शल्यसेनापत्यारोहणं व्यूहवर्णनं च)

अहन्यहनि युध्यन्तं क्षोभयन्तं बल॑ तव । तस्माज्जहि रणे शल्यं मघवानिव शम्बरम्‌,इति सत्य ब्रवीम्येष दुर्योधन न संशय: । “मैं रणभूमिमें कुन्तीके सभी पुत्रों और सामने आये हुए सोमकोंपर भी विजय प्राप्त कर लूँगा। इसमें भी संदेह नहीं कि मैं तुम्हारा सेनापति होऊँगा और ऐसे व्यूहका निर्माण करूँगा, जिसे शत्रु लाँघ नहीं सकेंगे। दुर्योधन! यह मैं तुमसे सच्ची बात कहता हूँ। इसमें कोई संशय नहीं है” “इसलिये प्रतिदिन समरांगणमें जूझते और आपकी सेनाको विक्षुब्ध करते हुए राजा शल्यको युद्धमें आप उसी प्रकार मार डालिये, जैसे इन्द्रने शम्बरासुरका वध किया था

ahany ahani yudhyantaṁ kṣobhayantaṁ balaṁ tava | tasmāj jahi raṇe śalyaṁ maghavān iva śambaram iti satyaṁ bravīmyeṣa duryodhana na saṁśayaḥ |

Sanjaya said: “Day after day, as he fights on and throws your forces into turmoil, therefore slay King Śalya in battle—just as Maghavān (Indra) slew the demon Śambara. Duryodhana, I tell you this as the truth; there is no doubt.” In ethical tone, the verse frames counsel in the hard logic of war: when a single commander repeatedly destabilizes an army, decisive action is urged, and the advice is strengthened by invoking an exemplary mythic precedent (Indra’s victory) to bolster resolve and legitimacy in a dharma-contested conflict.
