Duryodhana’s Refusal of Reconciliation
jayadratho hato rājan ki nu śeṣam upāsmāhe | ko hīha sa pumān asti yo vijeṣyati pāṇḍavam ||
Sañjaya said: “O King, Jayadratha has been slain. On whom, then, are we to rely as what remains? Who indeed is there here—what man—who can overcome the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna)?”

The verse highlights the collapse of confidence built on external supports—alliances, numbers, and reputation—when confronted by extraordinary prowess aligned with a larger moral and narrative momentum. It underscores how, in war, morale and perceived inevitability can shift decisively after a pivotal death.
Sañjaya reports to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Jayadratha has been killed. He voices the Kaurava camp’s shock and discouragement, asking whom they can now depend on and whether anyone remains capable of defeating the Pāṇḍava hero—here, Arjuna.
