Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Lament and Inquiry (Śalya-parva, Adhyāya 2)
yad yathā yādṛśaṃ caiva yuddha-vṛttaṃ ca sāmpratam | akhilaṃ śrotum icchāmi kuśalo hāsi saṃjaya saṃjaya ||
Vaiśampāyana said: “Sañjaya, I wish to hear in full—exactly how it happened and in what manner—the account of the battle as it stands at present. You are skilled in recounting it; therefore, tell me everything.”
The verse highlights the ethical importance of accurate testimony: events—especially violent, dharma-challenging ones like war—should be reported completely and truthfully, without distortion, by a competent narrator.
Vaiśampāyana frames a request directed to Sañjaya, asking him to recount, in full detail and exactly as it occurred, the current course and nature of the battle.
