धृतराष्ट्रविलापः — Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Lament and Inquiry (Śalya-parva, Adhyāya 2)
एवमेव हतो द्रोण: सर्वेषामेव पश्यताम । युद्धके मुहानेपर तुमलोगोंके देखते-देखते भीष्मजी किरीटधारी अर्जुनके हाथसे मारे गये। इसी प्रकार द्रोणाचार्यका भी तुम सब लोगोंके सामने ही संहार हो गया
evam eva hato droṇaḥ sarveṣām eva paśyatām |
Vaiśampāyana said: “Just so was Droṇa slain—before the very eyes of all. As Bhīṣma fell in battle while everyone watched, so too did Droṇācārya meet his destruction openly in the sight of the assembled warriors.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse underscores the public, undeniable nature of karmic consequence in war: even the greatest teachers and heroes fall, and their fall is witnessed by all—highlighting the gravity of adharma, the inevitability of death in battle, and the ethical weight borne by the community that participates and observes.
Vaiśampāyana narrates that Droṇa was slain in full view of the assembled warriors, drawing a parallel to the earlier, widely witnessed fall of Bhīṣma—emphasizing that these pivotal deaths occurred openly on the battlefield.
