O lord, if in that condition—when they are lying down unsuspecting—a cruel and crooked man should look upon them with intent to betray and harm them, he would surely sink into hell: a vast, deep ocean without any boat to save him. The speech underscores that attacking sleeping, unarmed men is a grave breach of righteous conduct and invites severe moral consequence.
कृप उवाच
The verse teaches that treacherously harming enemies who are helpless (asleep, unarmed, unsuspecting) violates dharma and leads to severe karmic consequence, symbolized as sinking into a vast, boatless ocean of hell.
Kṛpa warns his lord that the Pañcālas are likely sleeping at night after removing armor and becoming unwary; he cautions that betraying and attacking them in that state is a grievous adharma that condemns the perpetrator to hell.
