Karṇa-parva Adhyāya 20 — Yudhiṣṭhira–Duryodhana Encounter and Escalation of Arms

Sañjaya said: “Then, O best of kings, the battle flared up once again between Karṇa and the Pāṇḍavas’ forces—a clash that only swelled the dominion of Yama, for it increased the harvest of death.”

The verse underscores the moral gravity of war: renewed combat, however valorous, primarily results in death—symbolically described as enlarging Yama’s kingdom—reminding the listener that violence carries inevitable and collective consequences.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the fighting has resumed with intensity between Karṇa and the Pāṇḍava side, and he characterizes this renewed engagement as one that will greatly increase casualties.
