Sanjaya said: “My vision is unfailing; therefore, let your desired aims be fulfilled.” When he had spoken thus, all those dwellers of heaven replied to him: “O Lord, Vṛtrāsura has taken away our splendor and strength. You are the refuge of the gods. O Maheśvara, behold the condition of our bodies—shattered by Vṛtra’s blows. Therefore we have come seeking your protection; grant us shelter.” Ethically, the passage frames divine power as accountable to protection: the gods do not ask for domination for its own sake, but for restoration of order and safety through rightful refuge (śaraṇāgati) in Śiva.

Educational Q&A

The passage highlights śaraṇāgati (seeking refuge) and the ethical role of divine power: Śiva’s ‘unfailing’ darśana is portrayed as a source of protection and restoration when rightful order is threatened.

Śiva declares that his audience is never fruitless and that the gods’ wishes will be fulfilled. The gods then reply, describing how Vṛtrāsura has diminished their tejas and injured them, and they ask Śiva to grant them shelter and support.
