Sañjaya said: “Without first ascertaining the counsel of your brothers, you have given your word—declaring, ‘I will slay the Saindhava (Jayadratha).’ This is a rash and perilous act you have undertaken.”

A vow made in the heat of crisis must be weighed against prudent counsel and collective responsibility. Ethical action in war still requires deliberation; speech that binds oneself (pratiśruti) should not be issued without understanding consequences for one’s allies and strategy.
Sañjaya reports and evaluates Arjuna’s declaration to kill Jayadratha. He criticizes Arjuna for making this pledge without first consulting his brothers, calling it a daring—indeed dangerous—undertaking in the unfolding battle.
