Nārada said: “At that time, in the house of Rantideva, the son of Saṅkṛti—on whatever night a multitude of guests stayed there—twenty-one thousand cows were touched and then given away in charity.” The verse highlights a model of dharma grounded in hospitality and radical generosity: wealth is treated as a trust to be redistributed to those who arrive in need, especially guests who are to be honored as sacred.
नारद उवाच
The verse teaches atithi-dharma and dāna: honoring guests through generous giving, treating prosperity as a means to serve others rather than to hoard.
Nārada describes Rantideva’s extraordinary hospitality: whenever many guests stayed at his place, an immense number of cows—twenty-one thousand—were formally given away as gifts.
