Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how battlefield morale collapses under overwhelming force, and how a single figure’s steadfastness can stand out amid collective retreat—underscoring the kṣatriya ideal of holding one’s ground even when others falter.

Sanjaya reports to Dhritarashtra that the Kaurava fighters are being slain by sharp arrows and cannot maintain their position; only Jayadratha (the Saindhava) remains able to stand firm at that spot.
