Chapter 146 — Night Battle: Sātyaki and Duryodhana; Śakuni’s Encirclement of Arjuna

tena vṛṣṇipravīrāṇāṁ cakra na pratihanyate | api meruṁ vahet kaścit tared vā makarālayam | na tu vṛṣṇipravīrāṇāṁ sametyāntaṁ vrajen nṛpa ||

Sañjaya said: “Therefore the battle-array formed by the foremost heroes of the Vṛṣṇis cannot be checked by anyone. A man might lift Mount Meru, or even swim across the ocean—the abode of makaras; but, O king, having confronted that host of Vṛṣṇi champions, no one can reach its end.”

Educational Q&A

The verse uses deliberate hyperbole to convey the overwhelming, near-unstoppable collective strength of the Vṛṣṇi champions: some feats are imaginable in theory (lifting Meru, crossing the ocean), yet overcoming or even fully measuring such a host in battle is portrayed as beyond reach.

Sañjaya reports to the king that the Vṛṣṇi warriors have formed a powerful circular battle-array (cakra) that cannot be effectively resisted; he emphasizes its invincibility through comparisons to impossible or near-impossible feats.
