Sañjaya said: “From the signs and by inference I perceive that the king of Sindhu, Jayadratha, is no longer alive. Now, tell me—exactly as it happened—how that battle unfolded, step by step.”

The verse highlights responsible testimony: when outcomes are inferred from signs, one should still seek an exact, step-by-step account of events. It underscores the ethical value of truthful narration (yathāvṛttam) in the midst of war and uncertainty.
A speaker addresses Sañjaya, stating that by inference he believes Jayadratha (the Sindhu king) has been killed, and then requests Sañjaya to recount precisely how the battle occurred, in full detail.
