Sañjaya said: Then the mighty Droṇa checked King Yudhiṣṭhira—who stood ready with his troops, intent on victory—preventing him from advancing. In the ethical tension of battle, the verse highlights how even a righteous king’s resolve is met by the opposing commander’s duty-bound resistance, where personal virtue and martial obligation collide on the field.
संजय उवाच
The verse underscores the battlefield reality that dharmic intent (Yudhiṣṭhira’s resolve to win for a just cause) must still pass through the opposing side’s equally binding martial duty (Droṇa’s obligation to defend and command). It frames war as a domain where righteousness does not remove resistance; it must be pursued with discipline, strategy, and acceptance of counter-force.
Yudhiṣṭhira, positioned with his troops and eager to press forward, attempts to advance. Droṇa, the powerful commander on the Kaurava side, blocks and restrains his movement, halting his advance in the ongoing battle sequence of the Droṇa Parva.
