Bhīṣma said: “All hosts of beings abide in you alone, having taken refuge in you—the giver of boons, O mighty-armed one. The sages declare you to be without beginning, middle, or end; beyond all limiting measure; and a ‘bridge’ that upholds the moral order of the world.”

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches that the highest refuge is the supreme principle/person in whom all beings are sustained. True authority is described as boundless and timeless, and as the ‘setu’—the stabilizing bridge that preserves lokadharma (the moral and social order).

Bhīṣma, speaking in the Bhīṣma Parva context, offers a hymn-like characterization of the addressed lord as the universal support. He reports the testimony of learned sages who define this lord as infinite and as the protector of worldly order.
