Bhīṣma Parva, Adhyāya 4 — Dhṛtarāṣṭra–Vyāsa Saṃvāda on Kāla and Jayalakṣaṇa

Signs of Victory

vaiśampāyana uvāca | evam uktvā yayau vyāso dhṛtarāṣṭrāya dhīmate | dhṛtarāṣṭro 'pi tac chrutvā dhyānam evānvapadyata ||

Vaiśampāyana said: Having spoken thus to the wise Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the sage Vyāsa departed. Dhṛtarāṣṭra too, on hearing those words, entered into contemplation, reflecting for some time on what had been said—an inward pause that hints at moral unease on the eve of the great conflict.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the ethical weight of counsel and the necessity of inner reflection: after receiving grave words, a ruler should not rush to action but pause in dhyāna—serious contemplation—especially when decisions affect dharma and the fate of many.

Vyāsa, having delivered his message to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, departs. Dhṛtarāṣṭra then withdraws into thought, reflecting on Vyāsa’s prior statements, signaling tension and foreboding as the epic moves toward war.
