उत्पातवर्णनम् (Utpāta-varṇanam) — Catalogue of Portents

नैव स्थापयितुं शक्‍्या शूरैरपि महाचमू: । सत्कृत्य महतीं सेनां चतुरड्रां महीपति: । उपायपूर्व मेधावी यतेत सततोत्थित:,उस समय बहुत-से शूरवीर भी उस विशाल वाहिनीको रोककर खड़ी नहीं रख सकते। इसलिये बुद्धिमान्‌ राजाको चाहिये कि वह सतत सावधान रहकर कोई-न-कोई उपाय करके अपनी विशाल चतुरंगिणी सेनाको विशेष सत्कारपूर्वक स्थिर रखनेका यत्न करे

naiva sthāpayituṃ śakyā śūrair api mahācamūḥ | satkṛtya mahatīṃ senāṃ catur-aṅgāṃ mahīpatiḥ | upāya-pūrvaṃ medhāvī yateta satatotthitaḥ ||

Vyāsa said: Even many heroes cannot simply halt and hold in place a vast host. Therefore a wise king, ever alert and ready to act, should employ well-considered means and, with due honor and careful attention, strive to keep his great fourfold army steady and disciplined.
