Vyāsa reports ominous portents on the eve of the great conflict: fierce winds rage in every direction and the dust will not settle; the earth repeatedly trembles; and Rāhu moves toward the sun, as if to seize it. These signs frame the war as a moral crisis for the world—nature itself reflecting the disorder unleashed when kṣatriya power turns toward fratricidal destruction and dharma is strained to its limits.
