Sañjaya said: “O king, on the tenth day, when Bhīṣma and Arjuna met in combat, for a brief while the scene appeared like a mighty whirlpool rising in the ocean—like the waters churning when the Gaṅgā plunges into the sea.”

Educational Q&A

The verse underscores the overwhelming force unleashed when great warriors meet: even within the bounds of kṣatriya-dharma, battle can become a natural-cataclysm-like event, reminding the listener of the grave consequences and moral weight of war.

On the tenth day of the Kurukṣetra war, Bhīṣma and Arjuna engage directly. Sañjaya describes the clash’s intensity through a simile: it looked like a huge whirlpool in the ocean, as if stirred by the Gaṅgā’s descent into it.
