Sañjaya said: Enraged, Bhīṣma hurled that weapon toward the chariot of Phālguna (Arjuna). Seeing it rushing in like a blazing thunderbolt, the Sṛñjayas together pressed Bhīṣma hard in the battle. Then Arjuna—delighting the Pāṇḍavas—took five sharp arrows called bhallas, and in anger cut into five pieces that śakti-weapon which had been launched by Bhīṣma’s arms. The episode highlights disciplined skill and alert protection amid the fury of war: even in righteous combat, restraint and precision are the means by which harm is checked.

Educational Q&A

Even in the heat of righteous warfare, protection and restraint are expressed through disciplined skill: Arjuna neutralizes a deadly threat precisely, preventing wider harm rather than escalating indiscriminately.

Bhīṣma, enraged, hurls a śakti toward Arjuna’s chariot. As it approaches like a blazing thunderbolt, the Sṛñjayas collectively assail Bhīṣma, while Arjuna counters by taking five bhalla arrows and slicing the incoming weapon into five pieces.
