I shall depart for my own abode—the ancient station that has long been mine—only when the Sun has turned to the northern course (uttarāyaṇa). O Haṁsas, I tell you this in truth. (The statement underscores a deliberate, dharma-guided choice of time for departure, valuing auspicious order and steadfast resolve amid the surrounding turmoil of war.)

Educational Q&A

The verse emphasizes steadfast adherence to truth and to a dharma-informed sense of auspicious timing: one should act (even in matters of life’s end) with deliberate alignment to cosmic order rather than impulse or fear.

A speaker declares an intention to depart for an ancient, rightful abode only when the Sun enters its northern course (uttarāyaṇa), addressing the Haṁsas and affirming the statement as truthful—echoing the epic’s motif of choosing the proper time for departure amid the larger war setting.
