Sañjaya said: O scorcher of foes, when Bhīṣma, supported by the Kurus, was engaged in battle on one side, and Arjuna, together with the heroes of Pāñcāla, confronted him on the other, a doubt arose in all minds as to which side would attain victory.
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights the moral and strategic uncertainty inherent in war: even with renowned champions and large armies, outcomes remain doubtful, reminding readers that victory is not guaranteed by might alone and that human effort operates amid larger forces (dharma, destiny, and circumstance).
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Bhīṣma, backed by the Kuru host, is fighting on one side while Arjuna, supported by the Pāñcāla warriors, confronts him on the other; seeing these opposing strengths, observers become unsure which side will win.
