sañjaya uvāca | kuravaḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ sārthaṃ yad ayudhyanta bhārata | yathā ca tad abhūd yuddhaṃ tat tu vakṣyāmi sāmpratam ||
Sanjaya said: O Bharata, I shall now recount how the Kurus fought together with the Pandavas, and in what manner that battle unfolded. In this declaration lies the ethical weight of the epic: the war is not merely an event to be described, but a consequential clash of kin bound by duty, choice, and the outcomes of their actions.
The verse frames the war as an accountable narrative: actions between kin (Kuravas and Pandavas) must be reported truthfully, implying that conflict is inseparable from moral causality—how the battle happened matters as much as that it happened.
Sanjaya begins (or continues) his report to Dhritarashtra, announcing that he will now describe the battle between the Kauravas and the Pandavas and the manner in which it unfolded.
