Hearing Arjuna’s words—words bound up with the resolve to bring about Bhīṣma’s fall—the Pāṇḍavas, with Kṛṣṇa among them, were filled with joy. Overcome by exhilaration, their bodies thrilled with gooseflesh. Having thus reached a firm decision, the Pāṇḍavas together with Mādhava, inwardly satisfied, took leave of the great-souled Bhīṣma and departed; and those best of men then retired each to his own resting place. The scene underscores a hard ethical tension of war: even when the opponent is revered as an elder and exemplar, strategy and resolve must be shaped by the demands of dharma as understood in a desperate conflict.
अजुन उवाच
The passage highlights the ethical complexity of righteous war: one may be compelled to oppose and even bring down a revered elder like Bhīṣma, yet must do so with deliberation, resolve, and continued respect—balancing strategic necessity with dharmic restraint.
After hearing Arjuna’s statement concerning the means of overcoming Bhīṣma, the Pāṇḍavas (with Kṛṣṇa) feel renewed confidence and joy, finalize their decision, respectfully take leave of Bhīṣma, and return to their quarters to rest.
