Educational Q&A

The passage highlights the ethical tension of war: even amid combat, loyalty and reverence toward elders (Bhīṣma) shape strategy. It also shows how adharma-driven aims (protecting one’s side at any cost) can appropriate the language of duty and protection.

Duryodhana, through Sañjaya’s narration, instructs Duḥśāsana to counter the tactical formation around Arjuna and Śikhaṇḍin. Since Arjuna shields Śikhaṇḍin—who is positioned to bring down Bhīṣma—Duḥśāsana is told to arrange defenses so Śikhaṇḍin cannot kill Bhīṣma.
