Arjuna and Ulūpī: Explanation of Śānti and the Maṇipūra Resolution
iti matvā tadātmānaṃ pratyādiṣṭaṃ sa māgadhaḥ | tathyam ity abhigamyainaṃ prāñjaliḥ pratyapūjayat ||
Understanding thus that his life had truly been spared and that he had been formally dismissed, the Magadhan approached Arjuna. With hands joined in reverence, he honored him respectfully—signaling a shift from fear and hostility to acknowledgment of righteous restraint and magnanimity.
The verse highlights ethical restraint in power: when a warrior chooses to spare and formally release an opponent, that act can transform hostility into respect. Mercy aligned with dharma becomes a moral authority that compels acknowledgment even from adversaries.
After hearing Arjuna’s words and realizing he has been spared and dismissed, the Magadhan approaches Arjuna, joins his palms, and offers respectful honor—indicating acceptance of Arjuna’s decision and the truth of his safety.
