Brahma-vidyā: Satya–Tapas and the Enumeration of Tattvas

Arjuna–Vāsudeva framed dialogue

सत्यं हि गुणसंयुक्त नियतं पठउचलक्षणम्‌,क्योंकि गुणोंसे युक्त हुआ सत्य ही पाँच लक्षणोंवाला निश्चित किया गया है

satyaṃ hi guṇasaṃyuktaṃ niyataṃ pañcalakṣaṇam

Vāyu said: Truth, when joined with the proper virtues, is indeed determined to be a fixed principle characterized by five defining marks. In ethical terms, truth is not mere factual speech, but a disciplined moral quality shaped by virtues and recognized through clear criteria.

Educational Q&A

Truth (satya) becomes a fully valid ethical principle when it is integrated with virtues (guṇas). It is not merely stating facts; it is regulated, value-aligned truthfulness recognized through defined criteria.

Vāyudeva is instructing the listener by defining satya as a virtue-qualified, rule-governed principle, and indicating that it is traditionally understood through five identifying marks.
